Women stocking up on tights

SEXY legs are making a statement for budget-conscious women as hemlines rise.

Winter stocking sales are soaring, with major brands reporting an increase of 65-70 per cent on this time last year for their collections of kaleidoscope colours and kooky-print tights.

Economists in the US, where hosiery sales have also skyrocketed, dubbed the craze a new "Lipstick Index" for measuring consumer sentiment during financial downturns.

Lipstick purchases have tended to grow during periods of economic hardship, with women buying make-up instead of expensive clothes and accessories, and now hosiery appears to be part of that trend.

Demand for fashionable legwear is being driven by the mini-skirt craze this season, as well as the affordability of hosiery for stylish women who want to update their wardrobe cheaply.

Shoppers are getting more adventurous, with hosiery in modern, bold designs including crocodile skin and polka dots, and bright block colours such as hot pink, becoming increasingly popular over traditional flesh-toned, sheer pantyhose.

Marlene Smillie, of hosiery importer Ambra Corporation, said there had been an increase of up to 70 per cent over the past 12 months of coloured opaque and patterned tights.

"Savvy shoppers know that with a small investment of between $15 and $30 they can totally update their look and fashionability of an outfit," Ms Smillie said.
